In order to effectively diagnose the aging of composite insulators, to improve the operation stability of transmission lines, and because the current domestic and foreign exsiting hydrophobicity detection and level estimation technology is still in development phase, this paper focuses on the research of composite insulators hydrophobicity detection and grade evaluation. The hydrophobic image is used as the research object, the Haar wavelet is used to deal with the noise, then hydrophobicity image is segmented to binary image through adopting a method based on maximum between-cluster variance. According to the distribution of water droplets or traces of water on the surface of hydrophobic image, it is founded that the distribution of water droplets or traces of water on the surface of the hydrophobic image could be indicated by the surface fractal dimension situation. On the criterion of combining the box dimension of the hydrophobic image, the box dimension of maximum water droplets with the ratio of the box dimension of maximum water droplets is proposed. And the hydrophobic image is effectively classified into good, fair and bad states. Experimental results show that the new method has higher classification accuracy, and can be used to analyze the hydrophobicity level of insulator.
